The company that holds the rights to one of the most familiar Christmas tunes will lose ownership of the song by the time Santa Claus comes to town next year, a federal appeals court has decided.
A Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel on Thursday ruled that the rights to “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” — now controlled by a Sony subsidiary — will terminate in mid-December 2016. The court said at the time the copyright will turn over to the descendants of John Frederick Coots, the man who wrote the classic holiday melody.
